Gin and Celery Tonic

This Gin and Celery Tonic is as about refreshing as cocktail can be. The green color is so appealing and it makes you feel like consuming a cocktail is almost healthy.

Gin and celery tonic cocktail with bottle of gin.

This celery tonic lends itself perfectly to the herbal notes of gin. I'd suggest a botanical gin such as Hendrick's or St. George's, but any herbal or London dry gin will do. If you like gin, this cocktail will make you very happy. And if you think you don't care for gin, maybe you should give it another chance!

This cocktail doesn't require a lot of ingredients.

Ingredients for a Gin and Celery Tonic:

Gin: I recommend a botanical gin.

Celery: This is a great way to use up some of the celery that might be losing some of its crispness in your vegetable bin. You can use both the stalks and the leaves of the celery.

Lemon Juice: I used Meyer lemon juice, but any fresh lemon juice will work with this recipe.

Sugar

Ice cubes: Both for the shaker and the glass

How to Make a Gin and Celery Tonic:

First, finely chop celery stalks.

Next, add the chopped celery to the bottom of a cocktail shaker along with the lemon juice and sugar. Muddle these ingredients together with a muddler. Top with ice cubes and add the gin. Shake the ingredients vigorously.

After that, fill a rocks glass with ice cubes.

Finally, strain the shaker ingredients into the glass and serve.

Celery is a wonderful ingredient. I usually keep a bunch in my crisper, and just for dipping or to garnish a bloody Mary

Chop it up and add it to soups, make homemade pesto with the leaves, try a citrus and celery salad, or make a celery root soup appetizer

Celery is not just for cutting calories! And it's actually pretty nutritious.

This is an updated post, first published in August, 2014. I've added a printable recipe card, new information, and updated photos.

I first saw this cocktail in the September, 2014 issue of Bon Appetit and had to make it the minute I saw it.

  5. For most of my life I thought I didn't like gin but back in 2013 we reconnected with an old friend who loves gin and collects bottles like other people save trading cards or old comic books. What we figured out through multiple tastings was that I am not a fan of juniper but I love gins that are less juniper intensive! Your cocktail would be the perfect, refreshing tipple on a hot summer evening, Karen!
