Chocobananas (Chocolate Covered Frozen Bananas)

Chocobananas, or chocolate covered frozen bananas are such a fun treat. They are also super easy to make. Just freeze the bananas, dip them in melted chocolate, and sprinkle them with your favorite toppings.

Chocolate covered bananas and I go way back, so when the Progressive Eats group decided to share food truck recipes this month, this was the first thing I thought of.

If you've been to Balboa Island in southern California, you probably have been to the little stand that sells Balboa Bars (chocolate coated ice cream bars) and chocolate dipped frozen bananas. Having one or the other, dipped in your favorite topping, is a requirement if you go there. That little stand has been serving these for over 75 years.

Today, there are countless food trucks across the country with cute banana-themed names selling chocolate covered bananas.

Your favorite sprinkles.

These chocolate covered frozen bananas are super easy to make. All you need to do is cut firm but ripe bananas in half, insert a popsicle stick, and freeze the bananas for about 30 minutes.

Next, melt the chocolate with the oil either in a microwave or a double boiler.

After that, spoon the chocolate over the frozen bananas and quickly dip them in your favorite toppings before returning them to the freezer.

Once these bananas have frozen, do no let them thaw. Keep them in the freezer in a freezer bag. You can either serve them straight from the freezer, or remove them about 10 minutes before serving. If they are allowed to thaw, they will be quite mushy.

Additional topping ideas for frozen bananas.

Besides sprinkles, topping ideas include chopped nuts, toffee bits, granola, crushed Oreos, chopped M&Ms, flaked coconut, or crushed cereal.

You could also drizzle melted white chocolate over the dark chocolate.

    1. Yes. That's exactly where you should store them after you've coated them.
