Cabbage Salad with Braeburn Apples & Spiced Pecans

This cabbage salad with Braeburn apples and spiced pecans is the perfect winter salad. It's crunchy, spicy, and tossed with an Asian-flavored dressing.

Cabbage Salad with Braeburn Apples & Spiced Pecans

This has been my go-to recipe for a salad when I'm serving an Asian flavored main course, particularly with this Korean barbecue flank steak. This salad is also substantial enough for a lunch main course, and because it's a cabbage salad, any leftovers you may have will hold up pretty decently for the next day.

Irish Champ

Champ is a delicious Irish side dish made with mashed potatoes. scallions, chives, and lots and lots of melted butter. You can't go wrong serving this traditional Irish dish on St. Patrick's Day.

Irish champ

Like colcannon, champ is a traditional Irish potato dish. It's an easy way to combine mashed potatoes with greens, in this case green onions and/or chives. Also like colcannon, champ was traditionally served on Halloween. You were supposed to leave a bowl under a bush for the fairies, according to The Complete Irish Pub Cookbook.

Mandarin Pancakes with Moo Shu Pork

These Mandarin Pancakes are meant for wrapping Moo Shu Pork. They are soft, thin, and flavored with sesame oil and totally fun to make.

Mandarin Pancakes for Moo Shu Pork

Making these Mandarin Pancakes, the traditional wrapper for moo shu pork, is much easier than you would expect. It's similar to making homemade flour tortillas, except that you mix the flour with boiling water, and you sandwich two layers of the dough with sesame oil before cooking the pancakes in a wok.

Cardamom Cake with Mulled Wine Jam

This cardamom cake is frosted with a sweet mascarpone icing and filled with a boozy mulled wine jam with black grapes and plums.

This cardamom cake is frosted with a sweet mascarpone icing and filled with a boozy mulled wine jam with black grapes and plums.

This cardamom cake is my first attempt at an "almost naked" cake. It's not totally naked on the sides because you frost it and then scrape most of the frosting off. It's still so liberating to not worry too much about visible crumbs in your frosting.

Red Velvet Whoopie Pies with Cream Cheese Filling

These red velvet whoopie pies are made with soft, fluffy, and a little chocolatey cakes, and filled with a sweet cream cheese frosting.

Red Velvet Whoopie Pies with Cream Cheese Filling

These red velvet whoopie pies are little mounds of cake filled with a traditional cream cheese frosting. If you like, you can dust the edges of the frosting with chopped toasted walnuts, just like traditional red velvet cake.

When I first started playing around with baking, I was briefly obsessed with whoopie pies. I bought a cookbook (affiliate link), a whoopie pie pan (you don't need one), but I never actually made any because my bread obsession took over my baking life.

Chili Gumbo

Chili Gumbo! Make some chili, make some gumbo, and then mix them all together. With a roux and the holy trinity of gumbo (onions, bell pepper, and celery), it's pretty much a creole take on meaty chili.

Chili Gumbo, a combo of beef chili and a gumbo topped with Fritos

This chili gumbo is meaty and tomato-y, and there is plenty enough to serve a crowd.

Cucumber Margarita

To make this refreshing cucumber margarita, all you need is a cucumber, some fresh lime juice, and of course some tequila and orange liqueur.

Cucumber margarita with a salted rim

The flavors of fresh pureed cucumber and freshly squeezed lime juice give this cucumber margarita such a refreshing flavor. It's kind of like a spa margarita, right? In fact, without any added sugar, you could probably call it a "skinny" margarita.

Vörtbröd (Swedish "Wort" Bread)

Vörtbröd, Swedish "Wort" Bread, is a flavorful rye bread with a soft crumb and a wonderful aroma.

Vörtbröd (Swedish "Wort" Bread) |

Vörtbröd gets its name because it traditionally includes brewer's wort, which is beer before it has been fermented, plus it is what gives beer its flavor. It's essentially the "starter" for beer.

Cheesy Pan Pizza with Turkey Sausage

This cheesy pan pizza with turkey sausage begins with a light and airy yet thick crust which is topped with lots of mozzarella cheese, cooked turkey sausage, and a little bit of marinara sauce, and then baked in a cast iron pan for an extra crispy crust.

Pan Pizza with Turkey Sausage

Because the cheese goes all the way to the edge of the dough, just like with Detroit pizza, each slice of pizza is crispy from edge to edge. To ensure that the dough does not get soggy, you place most of the cheese on the dough first, then a few dollops of sauce, and finally more cheese.
