Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato Salad {B.L.T. Style Salad}

This bacon, lettuce, and tomato salad takes all of the ingredients from the classic B.L.T sandwich, and turns them into a delicious salad.

Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato Salad

This B.L.T. Style Salad would be wonderful as either a starter for dinner, or a main course for lunch with some chopped avocado. You could even add croutons to the salad to capture all of the ingredients of a B.L.T. sandwich.

The dressing for this B.L.T. Salad is simple and delicious. It's mayonnaise based, like the sandwich, but with a special ingredient.

The secret ingredient is two tablespoons of good sherry vinegar. I first tried sherry vinegar in these Red Pepper Coques, and really loved the flavor it added. I happened to use this brand, and just noticed that America's Test Kitchen rated it as a winner in a taste test in an episode last year. I was able to find it in a specialty grocery store. If you can't find sherry vinegar, you can substitute red wine vinegar.

B.L.T. Style Salad

I used heirloom cherry tomatoes in my salad, but you can use any size tomatoes in this salad, as long as they are fresh, ripe, and juicy.

If you like bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches, you will love this salad.

True confession time.... in the spirit of the B.L.T.s of my childhood, I substituted Miracle Whip for the mayonnaise. When I was growing up, my mother sometimes served B.L.T.s as a quick and easy dinner, and the bread was always spread with Miracle Whip, not mayonnaise. It was delicious, and brought back memories. Get a small jar and give it a try!

Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato Salad {B.L.T. Style Salad}

This recipe was adapted from the the book, Mark Bittman's Kitchen Matrix: More Than 700 Simple Recipes and Techniques to Mix and Match for Endless Possibilities. It is a compilation of the "Eat" column in The New York Times Magazine. This week, Wendy of A Day in the Life on the Farm chose the section, Tomatoes +12 Ways for our one-year project begun by Camilla of Culinary Adventures wth Camilla.

This section of the book included tomato salads, soups, and sauces, as well as three recipes for stuffed tomatoes. After the recipe, check out the tomato recipes Camilla and Wendy made.
