A michelada is a refreshing Mexican beer cocktail. It's great for brunch or hanging out on a warm day.
It's also great for celebrating National Drink a Beer Day, which is September 28. It's made with a light Mexican beer and Clamato or tomato juice, as well as salty, sour, spicy, and umami flavors.
This light beer cocktail is great for for football game days too. The drink is not too heavy, making it great for sipping all day.
Ingredients in This Michelada:
Clamato Juice: It's a juice made with tomato juice, clam juice, and sometimes spices. It comes in five flavors, including a version specifically for making micheladas as well as a sweet version that includes mango. I used the spicy version, "picante," for this cocktail.
While Clamato juice is traditional for a michelada, you can also substitute tomato juice or V-8 juice.
Beer: A light Mexican beer is perfect for this cocktail, such as Corona, Tecate, Modelo, or Sol.
Sour Flavor Component: Lime juice, for rubbing the rim of the glass as well as adding to the mix.
Salty Component: To rim the glass, after rubbing it with lime juice, dip the rim in a chile lime seasoning, such as Tajín. I used a chile lime seasoning I received from Melissa's Produce which is similar to Tajín.
The chile lime seasoning can also be used to sprinkle on fruits such as pineapple and mango, seasoning taco meat, and rimming margarita glasses.
Umami Components: I used a combination of Worcestershire sauce along with either fish sauce or Maggi Sauce. You could also substitute soy sauce or teriyaki sauce.
Spicy Component: Use your favorite hot sauce such as Tapatio, Cholula, or Tabasco sauce.
Garnishes: After coating the rim of the glass with the chile lime seasoning, garnish with a slice of lime. You can also add a couple of cooked and peeled shrimp and/or a stalk of celery.
To Make a Michelada:
First, rub the rim of a pint glass with lime juice and then coat the rim with chile lime seasoning. Then, fill the glass with ice cubes.
Next, add lime juice, Worchestershire Sauce, fish sauce or Maggi Sauce, and hot sauce. Pour about 6 ounces of Mexican beer into the glass, letting the foam subside.
Finally, top the beer with about four to six ounces of Clamato juice and then add more hot sauce to taste.
Michelada Recipe Variations:
Be sure to play around with the different umami flavors to find your favorite combination.
To make micheladas for a crowd, you can mix the Clamato with the seasonings and lime juice in advance and then assemble each cocktail in rimmed ice-filled glasses as needed. Just add the beer and the juice mix right before serving.
What to Serve with a Michelada:
These micheladas goes great with appetizers such as Mango salsa and chips. For brunch, serve them with a Mexican breakfast casserole or breakfast tacos.
For a great lunch or dinner, these micheladas are wonderful with Tortas de Chile Colorado de Res (Chile Colorado Beef Sandwiches), or Pork Pozole Verde.

Micheladas were one of my mother's favorite summer drinks because they are so refreshing. She always bought them premade in a can but yours looks so much more delicious!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I’ve seen the premade mix but not with beer. Some of our Mexican markets have cups for Cheladas which is the spices without the Clamato.
DeleteThis sounds like a perfect summer drink!
ReplyDeleteI have never tried a Michelada...I am going to rectify that.
