Famous Breakfast Burritos (copycat Lucky Boy)

If you are craving a big traditional breakfast burrito, no matter what time of day it is, this Famous Breakfast Burrito will satisfy your cravings.

Famous Breakfast Burritos

This breakfast burrito is the perfect antidote for anyone looking for a hangover preventer, cure, or just a hearty meal wrapped up in one big package any time of day. And "big" is the operative word here.

While each burrito is supposedly one serving, it may take several sittings to actually finish your single serving. If you want to split this burrito with someone, I won't judge. This burrito weighs in at 2 pounds.

About the Famous Breakfast Burrito:

The Famous Breakfast Burrito is a staple from Lucky Boy Burgers, a walk-up stand with limited seating with two locations in Pasadena, California. The company was founded in 1961 and is now run by the third generation of the same family. I believe the family is Greek, and the original menu included lots of Greek specialties, but also included burgers and fries.

The menu still includes gyros, but otherwise, the biggest sellers are burgers, chili cheese fries, and the Famous Breakfast Burrito. In fact, this breakfast burrito is likely the biggest seller on the menu.

The signs in front of the restaurant includes an additional one saying "Home of the Famous Breakfast Burrito."

Folks flock from all over southern California to Pasadena to get one of these breakfast burritos when they have a craving. Plus, it's sold all day.

Any time any Los Angeles area foodie website posts about the top ten breakfast burritos, they usually include the Famous. If they don't, they are flooded with emails and comments objecting that they forgot the Famous Breakfast Burrito.

I've even seen follow up posts where the sites come back to apologize and provide a review of this burrito. Go Lucky Boy!

There are even You Tubers who post videos of going into Lucky Boy, purchasing the burrito, and then eating one in its entirety in their car.

P.S. Fun fact. Lucky Boy is across the street from the original Trader Joe's. I'm very proud that my original home town is the birth place of both and is adjacent to the birth place of In-N-Out Burger.

Ingredients in this breakfast burrito:

Three eggs. The eggs are scrambled and then cooked on a griddle until fluffy and cooked through.

One and one-half cups of hash brown potatoes. What distinguishes these has browns is that they are tossed with garlic and paprika before they are grilled on the flat top. I used frozen hash browns and after mixing in the garlic and paprika, followed the package directions.

Five slices of bacon. At Lucky Boy, they deep fry the bacon. While I didn't deep fry my bacon, I totally appreciate the spirit of this!

Cheddar cheese. At Lucky Boy, they use the pre-grated supermaket style grated cheese. Since I had a block of cheddar, I decided to grate it myself.

Tortillas. I used the largest floppy flour tortillas I could find. My favorite supermarket brand is Guerrero.

The burrito comes with some some little containers of salsa. The salsa adds just the right amount of acid to compliment the rich ingredients in this burrito.

I love breakfast burritos, especially when they involve potatoes, bacon, eggs, and cheese. I'm also partial to old school family run restaurants.

It's been a long time since I immediately wanted to remake a recipe that I just made, but this was one of them. I can see these on our regular breakfast (or dinner) rotation.

Ingredients

  • 5 slices bacon
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen hash browns
  • 1/2 teapoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, plus more for the eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, plus more for the eggs
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 extra-large eggs
  • 1/2 cup (2 ounces) grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 extra-large flour tortilla
  • 2 sheets of parchment paper
  • Salsa

Instructions

  1. Heat your oven to 250 degrees F and place a sheet pan on the middle rack.
  2. Fry the bacon in a 12 inch skillet until cooked, Drain on a paper towel lined plate, and place, wrapped in the paper towels, in the oven on the baking sheet.
  3. Toss the potatoes with the paprika, garlic, salt, and pepper. Heat 1 tablespoon of the butter in the frying pan and add the potatoes. Fry according to package directions, typically about 5 minutes per side, until browned. Transfer the potatoes to the sheet pan in the oven.
  4. Whisk the eggs in a bowl with a pinch of salt and pepper. Heat the remaining tablespoon of butter in the skillet and add the eggs. Cook until just cooked. Remove from the heat.
  5. Heat the tortilla on a griddle for about 30 seconds per side, until heated through.
  6. Mound the hash browns in the center of the tortilla, spreading them in a line through the middle.
  7. Top the hash browns with the eggs and sprinkle with the cheese.
  8. Lay the bacon on top of the cheese. Fold the ends of the tortillas on either side toward the center and then roll up the tortillas around the filling, rolling away from you.
  9. Place the burrito onto two layers of parchment paper and wrap up the burritos in the parchment. Cut the burrito in half and serve with salsa.

This recipe was inspired by the book, The L.A. Cookbook: Recipes from the best restaurants, bakeries, and bars in Los Angeles by Alison Clare Steingold, 2018. It's a wonderful book. I'm hoping all of these restaurants survive.

  1. Holy cow that looks good. I think I'm hungry enough to eat the whole thing but my eyes are often bigger than my stomach.

  2. Burritos are always most aesthetically pleasing when they are huge. Bill and I like enjoying mission burritos from a local taqueria. They have some breakfast burritos but I haven't been up there to have them. We usually get huevos rancheros. I'll have to give this place a try if I infect L.A. with my presence again soon, but until then, I'm glad to have your recipe.

  3. Breakfast Burritos for dinner.. wow, looks so so good. Though of course I'd give bacon a skip. As these are just too big for breakfast, would love to enjoy them as dinner.
