This Strawberry Whiskey Sour is so frothy and refreshing. It's sort of like a grown up smoothie... with whiskey! Even if you normally don't care for bourbon or whiskey cocktails, give this one a try.
Doesn't this drink just scream strawberry? I love the thickness from the fresh fruit, combined with the traditional whiskey sour flavor. It's a wonderful cocktail for an al fresco Sunday brunch or dinner. Use the freshest, juiciest strawberries you can find.
In Southern California, strawberry stands begin to pop up as early as March and stay open as late as August. You can buy flats loaded with strawberries that are juicy and huge. Mr. Kitchen is in charge of stalking the empty lot on a corner near our house until they finally erect the wooden stand and begin selling them.
We usually buy about three to four baskets per week and have no trouble using them all.
Not that long ago, (okay, maybe thirty years ago) there were several amazing working strawberry farms just a few minutes from our house, vestiges of old southern California wedged between housing tracts and strip malls.
In fact, when I was in sales back then, every spring I used to stop by a local farm and pick up big flats of the strawberries and deliver them to clients. All of the local farms are pretty much gone, and most of the strawberries come from farms in other nearby counties that still have farmland. Still, we have our Strawberry Festival every year!
P.S. The California Strawberry Festival is happening in Ventura County right now!
Which brings me to this cocktail... it is loaded with fresh strawberries from Harry's Berries, a local family owned farm in Ventura County! These berries are distinctive in that they are organic, vine-ripened, super sweet, and red inside from end to end. They are what strawberries are supposed to taste like. Outside of the local farmers' markets, they are distributed by Melissa's Produce.
The photo below illustrates the end-to-end red color of Harry's Berries versus standard strawberries.
Ingredients in this Strawberry Whiskey Sour:
Strawberries: You will need about 4 large strawberries or 8 smaller strawberries. When blended, there should be about 1/2 cup of strawberry puree.
Whiskey: Either bourbon or Scotch whiskey are fine in this cocktail.
Lemon Juice: Use juice from freshly squeezed lemons.
Lemonade Concentrate: Frozen lemonade concentrate. I love using frozen lemonade or limeade concentrate for cocktails. It's great for Margaritas and gimlets in fact. Just transfer the concentrate to an airtight container and keep it in the freezer. It is so easy to scoop out a teaspoon or two when you need it. If you don't have the lemonade concentrate, you can substitute simple syrup or sweet and sour mix.
I'm so sad that Minute Maid no longer sells the concentrate, but most grocery stores carry a generic version.
To Make This Cocktail:
First, combine the chopped strawberries with the lemon juice and lemonade concentrate and let the strawberries marinate.
Next, add the mixture to a blender or mini food processor and add the whiskey. Blend the ingredients until everything is pureed.
Finally, add the mixture to an ice filled glass.
Equipment You May Need:
You will need a blender or a mini food processor. I used a small blender, which made short work of these cocktails.
If you'd like to make a blended drink with ice cubes. a stronger blender, such as a Vitamix, will work.
Recipe Variations:
You could substitute any of your favorite fruits for the strawberries to make this cocktail. My favorites include blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, mango, or any of the stone fruits.
Make-Ahead:
You can make up the cocktail mixture in advance. Just skip the ice. Refrigerate the drink mix and save it for pouring over ice when your guests arrive.
